Meeting Info
The next meeting of The Circle of Janus will be March 6, 1999 at the Children’s Museum. The meeting will begin at the usual time.

ConCom Meeting
By Randy Porter
There will be an Inconjuntion ConCom meeting at the Children's Museum at 6:00pm. On the agenda will be Vicki Merriman and the convention Newspaper(aka the Program) go Vicki. The Play, by Deb Hunt, is based on the Lion King which is based on Hamlet, which is based on some old roman play or something. Of course we will have the monthly regular reports from all the rest. Also I would like to schedule a time to have a planning meeting regarding the Devival, I want to have the most twisted one ever. I look forward to seeing all of you Saturday.

Election Results
At the February meeting we finally had our elections. The results weren't exactly earth shaking. After all, Jesse Ventura wasn't running for one of our offices. But it's kind of comforting that the choice you have is among two or more reliable people.

Mike Cowper was elected without opposition to another term as president. Likewise Vicki Merriman is Vice President; Lynette Cowper, Secretary; and Linda Dunn, Treasurer. Lynette Cowper was elected ConChair for InConJunction XXI in 2001. Bob McGillem is our Board Chairman.

Buck Coulson
By now you have heard that Buck Coulson died suddenly, Friday, February 19th. He had been battling heart disease and diabetes for many years. He was in the hospital and seemed to be doing well but suffered a sudden crisis during the night.

Buck was a pro but first he was a fan. He, with his wife Juanita, attended literally hundreds of cons and was Fan Guest of Honor at many including InConJunction. I don't think they ever missed an InCon. By day, Buck could be found in the Dealer's Room, by night, in the ConSuite or at the filk listening to Juanita and her phenomenal voice. Always congenial, he would make you feel as if you had been friends for years whether you were a neo or a veteran of First Fandom.

Buck was a writer, a reviewer, and a contributor. With Gene Deweese, he wrote two of the best and funniest novels ever set in fandom: Now You See It/Him/Them and Charles Fort Never Mentioned Wombats. The first is a murder mystery that takes place at a con. The second involves aliens at the Australian Worldcon trying vainly to convince the fans that they are real and not hoaxers or elaborate special effects. The hero of both is a mundane reporter who has no idea what's going on. Unfortunately both books have been out of print for some time. Buck and Gene also collaborated on perhaps the only good book ever to come out of the Man From Uncle paperback series, The Invisibility Affair , written under a pseudonym.

Buck Coulson contributed regularly to fanzines on nearly any subject. He appeared often in Lan's Lantern and The Reluctant Famulas. A week after Buck's death The Poul Anderson tribute issue of Lan's Lantern arrived in the mail and there was an article by Buck. He would have been pleased. A man of letters lives on.

Robin and I last saw Buck at Context. We chatted a while in the Consuite and shared a couple of drinks. I don't remember what we talked about but it doesn't matter. Buck was his usual chipper self, happy to be among his friends in fandom even though he was getting about in a wheelchair at the time. And that is how we'll remember him. Buck was among the first friends either of us made in fandom.

In keeping with his wishes there was no funeral. There may be a memorial service at Marcon, one of Buck's favorite conventions. Juanita has suggested that if anyone wishes to make a gesture of remembrance to donate to The American Heart Association or The American Diabetes Association. DAH

The Directory Project
Thank you for the additional information some of you provided at the last meeting. Now we have the problem of pictures. At Saturday's meeting, I am bringing my 35mm camera, a tripod and flash. It's going to be portrait time so come made up and dressed. It's painless and I promise it won't steal your soul. If you have a favorite picture, you can bring a print of it instead and we'll scan that. But this is it! If you don't provide data, I'll write what I like about you and maybe make it all up. Who knows what I'll put in the picture spot. DAH

Half Price Books - Book Donations
By Brooks A. Rowlett
This is a reminder that I will be collecting books to donate from the CoJ to the
Half Price Books/ Channel 13 WTHR project to build a "Half-Pint Library" for patients and their parents at Riley Children's Hospital. Please bring books for donation to the CoJ meeting Saturday night, as the project ends March 21st before the next CoJ meeting.

Books wanted: "New or Gently used".

Children's and young adults' books are primarily wanted, for the patients, but other books for the use of parents of patients are also welcome.

It would be especially nice to have science fiction and fantasy. These donations would also fit the club mission of promoting SF&F in the Central Indiana region. But if you want to contribute mainstream children's or YA books, they won't be turned down.

I'll present them to the Half Price Books Regional director and try to get the Club a bit of recognition as well. Since WTHR is involved, we may be able to get the club mentioned, if they do a PR spot to thank local organizations for their donations.

By the way, Ria Foxfel gets the credit for suggesting this as a club project.
